The Best of Nova Scotia's Flyfishing
It's April 15th and open season for speckled trout, brown trout, lake trout, rainbow trout and landlocked salmon. While 'tis true, sadly, that Nova Scotia's sport fishing just ain't what it used to be due to massive clearcutting and acid rain, there are still some great fishing holes to be found on Cape Breton Island and the mainland.

Fishing on the Liscombe RiverThe Province of Nova Scotia provides a 60 page Anglers' Handbook where you can find the information you need. This downloadable handbook (.pdf) has fees & licenses and the wherefore's and howto's of fishing Nova Scotia's inland waters. It even includes a handy Nova Scotia sport fish identification chart.

Tom Lee's excellent site offers up a 'bakers dozen' - the 13 best trout flies for Nova Scotia. After lugging box after box of flies around, Tom decided to narrow it down to the best of the east. At least, that's Tom's thirteen.

Tom, like all wise fishermen, also heeds the advice of the oldtimers and provides a list of the most requested flies (to tie) including old favourites like Parmachene Bell & Silver Doctor.

In case you aren't sure what fly to use when, check out one of the many hatch charts like the one available on Trout Nova Scotia. Dragon, damsel, caddis, stonefly... they're all here, including the time of day and water conditions where each hatches. That way, you'll know what the fish are biting, so you can tie on the right fly.

Red & Yellow Mickey Finn fishing fly is an all time favourite
Many anglers swear by red and yellow, and the Mickey Finn is an all time favourite for trout, salmon and several other species. Here, the Mickey Finn is shown on a Canada postage stamp. (photo courtesty Canada Post)

For senior and disable anglers, Nova Scotia offers several "Barrier Free" (pdf file) pools. Along Highway 7, McKeen's Pool in Aspen (just east of Sherbrooke) is a project of the St Mary's River Salmon Interpretive Center. The Center is open after June 1st and features displays of antique fishing tackle and the memorabilia of well known anglers like Babe Ruth, as well as salmon life cycle dioramas. The St. Mary's is one of Nova Scotia's best known salmon rivers.

Nova Scotia's fishing guides aren't as prolific as they once were, but you can check with the folks at Tight Lines on the Bay of Fundy. They can help you with pretty much anything you need and even give you casting lessons if you're a newbie.

For more outdoor adventures in Nova Scotia, check out the Province's search tools, or download your own NS Adventure Guide. Happy fishing and safe home!

St. Mary's River Association Interpretive Center offers a glimpse of the past - and the future for Atlantic Salmon. Did Babe Ruth cast a line in the St. Mary's?

Trout Nova Scotia
